Underlying Philosophy:

Art uses a powerful equation from his best-seller The “I” of the Hurricane: Creating Corporate energy, to clarify the elements that effective executives, managers, supervisors, and workers use to inspire themselves and others to take the lead.

“This is the most workable model of organization transformation and the achievement of excellence that I have seen”
Dr. Ronald Lippitt, Professor Emeritus, University of Michigan

(L) =ƒ (VI + V2) SS × ALR

Leadership  (L) generates power as a function of (VI), being aware of underlying core values that the leader and a critical mass of potential followers believe in, plus (V2)  having a mental picture or vision of a place to go or a new way of being, multiplied by (SS) the use of signaling skills to send consistent signals through day-to-day behavior in a manner that models the leader’s personal commitment to the organization’s vision and core values.  Effective leaders accept that (C) challenge is a legitimate responsibility of followers.  When challenges are met with (ALR) appropriate leader responses—appropriate meaning getting the job done but in a way that further reinforces vision and core values—inhibition is negated and what would have been resistance energy,  is transferred to task.  The process of signaling (SS) and altering the balance between challenge (C) and appropriate response (ALR) in support of values (V1) and vision (V2),  is the essence of leadership.
